Lumeah Guest House @ Adventure Bay – A Historic 1888 Landmark Stay on Bruny Island
Step into Lumeah, one of Bruny Island’s most iconic historic homes – built in 1888 by the Gray Brothers and lovingly preserved as a rare piece of Tasmania’s early settlement history.
Once the centre of a bustling sawmill settlement, Lumeah has lived many lives: a post office, shop, boarding house, youth hostel, gallery and a private school for settler families.
Today, it welcomes guests as warm, spacious, self-contained accommodation just steps from Adventure Bay’s peaceful Quiet Corner Beach. Here, the past is part of the experience. Many original features remain – timber details, heritage finishes, and the unmistakable charm of a nineteenth-century homestead.
Outside, relax in leafy fern gardens and enjoy the history beneath your feet. The property sits where the original sawmill once operated, surrounded by the grounds where 16 workmen’s huts, stables for 16 horses, a blacksmith’s shop and a school once stood. Every part of the house whispers stories of early island life and the families who shaped this community.
Perfect for families and groups of friends, Lumeah comfortably hosts up to 8 guests across 4 generous bedrooms, two inviting living areas and a charming heritage-style layout. The home is tastefully renovated to preserve its original character – timber accents, period details and cosy atmospheric touches – while offering the convenience of a fully equipped kitchen, modern bathroom amenities and a lovely fireplace for cool Bruny evenings.
Lumeah is perfectly positioned for an effortless island escape. Enjoy being only steps from Quiet Corner Beach, a few minutes’ walk to Adventure Bay’s shops, the park and community centre, and close to multiple pristine white-sand beaches. You’re also just a short drive from the award-winning Bruny Island Cruises, Fluted Cape Track, wildlife encounters and some of Tasmania’s most fascinating coastal walks.
Whether you’re gathering family, exploring with friends, or seeking a heritage-rich retreat close to Adventure Bay’s best attractions, Lumeah offers an unforgettable stay where Bruny Island’s past and present come together in comfort, charm and natural beauty.
This charming historic cottage is located at the front of the property. At the rear, there is a small, fully separate private owner’s residence. It has its own entrance and is completely independent from the guest accommodation.
The private residence is completely independent from the guest cottage and does not form part of the accommodation. Your privacy and comfort are always respected, and guests enjoy a peaceful, uninterrupted stay.
Both the front and side gardens are all yours to enjoy throughout your stay. On one side, a lush fern forest creates a cool, rainforest-like atmosphere, while the garden on the other side is more open and sunlit, framed by beautiful native trees – offering two peaceful outdoor spaces to relax and unwind.
Lumeah Cottage is located in Adventure Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania.
